Spectrum Sharing: Trends and Outlook

Spectrum resources have become increasingly important in the recent years due to the explosive growth observed in mobile data traffic coupled with the improved sophistication and service quality that 4G networks offer compared to their predecessors. As the telecom industry is moving rapidly to 5G, the importance of having access to spectrum increases even further as it will utilise spectrum bands which have never been used before by operators to offer more advanced services over their mobile networks. Hence, the pressure of allocating spectrum resources optimally falls with the regulatory authorities, which need to come up with a spectrum authorisation framework that will meet the new demands and help avoid a potential ‘spectrum crunch’.
